Photo by Ana Santos Almost everyone I meet these days is going through tough times. Everywhere I’m hearing sad stories of loss of homes and jobs and income. I, too, have my own sad story to tell, although I didn’t lose my home. Nevertheless, things are tough at this end as well. However, I have come to realize that dwelling on one’s problems does not solve them. You can worry and worry, but it will not move you one iota toward a needed solution.
So the question naturally follows, `What then will move me toward a solution?’ That depends. It depends on your problem, for one thing, and it also depends on your own resources ? your ingenuity, creativity, and general state of mind. But I want to stress right at the start that the solution is never in the problem.
Worry, anxiety, sleepless nights, and loss of appetite will not do a thing for getting rid of whatever is bothering you. I’m aware that many will say they can’t help it. ‘What do you expect me to do?’ goes the cry. ‘It’s only natural to be afraid and worry when you haven’t got enough money to pay the bills.’ However, I want to tell you that it is not natural. It is learned behavior, and it can be unlearned.
Fear and worry and all their self-defeating offspring just make things worse. As you dwell on the problem over and over in your head, you are really inviting more of the same. It has to do with the law of attraction. What you focus on the most is what you attract to yourself. Thoughts are a form of energy, which, in turn, will reap consequences. Thing about anything long and hard enough, and you will manifest it in your reality. This is especially true when strong emotions are attached to the thoughts.
Rather than dwell on the problem, try imagining instead what it would be like if you didn’t have this problem. For instance, if you are suffering from bad health, then imagine what it would be like if you had good health. How would that make you feel? Happy, I’m sure. Keep your focus on the good, the positive. The same prescription goes for lack of sufficient funds. Imagine how wonderful it would feel if you had more than enough money to pay off your bills and even indulge some desires. There are good things to be said about positive thinking, a notion that has been around for a long time. So spend at least five minutes everyday imagining what it is you want and how wonderful it would make you feel right now to have that.
Also, there is something else to consider here: your world is filled with an abundance of health and wealth and whatever else you are lacking at the moment. Look around you. Nature does not know from bad health or lack. The trees are attired with countless leaves; the sky has no limits; the wind, the sun, the moon, the stars never shrivel from lack or old age or sickness. Everything you need in nature is abundantly bestowed for your well-being. Substance is unlimited. The universe is really very generous.
So why are we in lack? I submit that so many of our problems are man-made. We are often our own worst enemies. And after we create the problems, then we cry over ourselves, which only makes matters worse. Yes, I am aware that many people are merely victims. That people have lost their jobs, or had their income cut back, or their working hours were shortened. So many hurtful things have been going on in the working world that are beyond an individual’s control. For sure, not always are we at fault. However, fault is not really the issue here. What is the issue is simply the fact that financial lack is rampant nowadays, as well as fear and worry, and how can we turn all this around?
Albert Einstein was so full of brilliant quotes that always are right on the mark, and one I love especially is the following: “We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.” That’s my point exactly. Whether you created the problem, or it fell on you, adding more negative, self-defeating thinking will not solve it. But what that thinking certainly will do is make you miserable and weak, and worst of all, invite in more of the same. And that, in turn, can make you sick altogether.
So, whenever you find yourself descending into the depths of lack, worry, fear, anxiety, and all those other ugly states of mind, shift your thinking into the opposite direction. Start imagining the life you would like to have; what that life would be like; how it would make you happy; how you might create it. Go the fun place instead. Thoughts of lack, worry, fear, etc., may continue to arise again at a later time. Old habits do not die so fast. But once again, go back to that dreamy place, and keep doing that every time negative thoughts come up.
I know that many of us are ever so practical and sensible, and would argue that fantasy and dreams do not solve problems. My retort is that fear and worry don’t solve problems either, and in fact, exacerbate them even more.
Your fantasy and dreams will at least put you in a happier state of mind, plus relieve you of a ton of stress. And in that state of mind, perhaps some solution or some kind of creative idea can be born that will take you down a road toward an actual real-life solution. Because when stress controls the mind, creativity has no place to birth.
Just remember: the solution to the problem is never in the problem itself.
